The strike of geological strata is defined as the azimuth of the line formed by the intersection of the horizontal plane and a particular stratum. Strike is always measured in the northeast (NE) or northwest (NW) quadrants.
Definition of Dip:
The dip of geological strata is measured in the plane perpendicular to the strike and is defined as the angle between the horizontal plane and a particular stratum. 0° is horizontal, 90° is vertical. Since there are two possible dip directions for a given strike, the general direction of dip is specified as one of the principal compass directions (N,E,S, or W).
